Greek unemployment at 8.0 pct in February 2008

According to the National Statistics Service, the Greek unemployment rate in februari 2008 was 8.0 percent of the workforce, unchanged from January 2008.

The number employed people totaled 4,535,309 in February, the number of unemployed people totaled 394,169 and the number of financially non-active population totaled 4,293,199.

The National statistics service said the number of unemployed people fell in 2004 and 2005, it rose in 2006, but fell again in 2007 and early 2008. The Greek unemployment rate dropped from 11 pct in February 2004, to 10.4 pct in February 2005 and February 2006, falling to 9.0 pct in February 2007 and 8.0 pct in February this year.

The unemployment rate in Greece among women was 12.1 pct in February, more than double compared with a 5.2 pct rate for men. Western Macedonia (16.4 pct), southern Aegean (15.5 pct), Ionian islands (11.9 pct) and western Greece (11.3 pct) were the Greek regions with the highest unemployment rates in February, while Attica (5.9 pct), northern Aegean (6.6 pct), Thessaly (7.5 pct), the Peloponese (7.7 pct) and central Greece (7.9 pct) the lowest rates.

Unemployment in the age group between 15-24 years was 22.1 pct, in the 25-34 group (11.7 pct) and in the 35-44 group (6.0 pct).

International Babel Comics Festival, Athens, Technopolis

European Jazz Festival in Athens, Technopolis

Top Jazz performers come together for the free European Jazz Festival at Gazi’s Technopolis (Athens).

The European Jazz Festival was first held in 2001 and involved just a handful of countries. However, word of it’s success soon spread and each year a greater number of artists appear.

This year’s festival date: May 28th - June 1st 2008.

Acropolis Rally in Athens, FIA World Rally Championship

The Acropolis Rally in Athens is a well-established round of the World Rally Championship (WRC). A tradition in Greece’s capital for the past 50 years, this rally takes off at the foot of the Acropolis, follows a route throughout Athens and finishes in the Panathenaic Stadium. Date: 29/31 may 2008.

The Acropolis Rally won the award for WRC Rally of the Year in 2005, when the Olympic Stadium’s Super Special Stage wowed an audience of approximately 60,000 fans.

In 2006, a new route took in some of the old stages from the 1980’s. The Rally Centre, Media Centre and Service Park are all located at Athens’ Olympic Stadium.

The FIA World Rally Championship has a global television audience of more than 800 million people in almost 200 countries.

Ikarus Rock Festival Crete, Greece

Aurora Festival Greece - Asprovalta Halkidiki

WKF Youth Camp, Chalkida Greece 2008

The World Karate Federation (WKF) will organize the 1st karate training camp and world cup “WKF Youth Camp” in Evia on the island of Chalkida in Greece. This event will take place from the 1st till 4th of july, 2008.

For the World Farate Federation this 1st karate training camp and World Cup is a big event with which WKF want to double the effort of the federation to promote the sport at the lower ages.

The 14 & 15 years old karateka’s will become, in January next year, for the first time ever, an official WKF age category worldwide.

Therefore it is not by chance that a few months before the federation sends a clear sign of support to the teenagers welcoming them to this karate training with worldwide known instructors.

Participants of the WKF Youth Camp are invited to the forum to meet other participants.

Greece’s Olympic Airlines is canceling more flights and rescheduling other flights because of a work-to-rule slowdown by a pilots’ union.

The pilots are refusing any work beyond that strictly required by their contracts, and that has forced dozens of flight cancelations over the past 10 days.
