Two British tourists were sentenced to three years in jail yesterday. Both tourists are found guilty of complicity to manslaughter for the death of a Greek-Cypriot teenager.

Fridaymorning the southern Island Crete was hit by an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Greeks eat a lot of meat. A new study carried out for the Agriculture Ministry showed that more than a third (37.4%) Greeks eat meat three of four times a week.

Weather forecasters predicted yesterday a sharp rise in temperature from tomorrow. The temperature is expected to reach 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) but is forecast to drop to 20C (68F) by Monday.

The European Union proposed giving nearly 90 million euros in financial aid for helping Greece cope with the damage from last year’s forest fires.
The forest fires caused major damage to infrastructure and environment.

Greeks, among the heaviest smokers in the world, will be running out of places to light up their cigarettes in some years. The Greek government moves to adopt EU guidelines protecting people from passive smoking.
The Ministry of Health announced it will gradually ban smoking in public places, such as cafes and restaurants, by 2010.

Greece to continue talks on Macedonia’s name within UN

In Ekathimerini an article that the Greek police arrested seven people in Grevena, northern Greece.
The seven suspects, aged between 28 and 61, had metal detectors and digging equipment in two trucks. The suspects are believed to have been searching for a cache of gold sovereigns believed to have been buried in the area.
