US aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman in Rhodes

The aircraft carrier USS “Harry Truman” sailed into the port of Rhodes on Wednesday, after duty in the Persian Gulf where it was stationed since November.

More than 3,000 US sailors and officers are on board the vessel.

Earthquake at Crete Island

Weather Forecast Greece predicts high temperature

Ban on smoking in Greece

Greeks, among the heaviest smokers in the world, will be running out of places to light up their cigarettes in some years. The Greek government moves to adopt EU guidelines protecting people from passive smoking.

The Ministry of Health announced it will gradually ban smoking in public places, such as cafes and restaurants, by 2010.

Macedonia name issue

Greece to continue talks on Macedonia’s name within UN

Greece continues negotiations within the United Nations to resolve the naming dispute over neighboring Macedonia (FYROM), which shares its name with the northern Greek province Macedonia, prime minister Konstandinos Karamanlis said on Monday.

The naming dispute has been running since Macedonia’s independence from Yugoslavia 17 years ago, with Greece objecting to Skopje using the name “Republic of Macedonia.” Athens says this implies a territorial claim on Greece’s province of Macedonia, birthplace of Alexander the Great.

Arrested for seeking treasures in Grevena

In Ekathimerini an article that the Greek police arrested seven people in Grevena, northern Greece.

The seven suspects, aged between 28 and 61, had metal detectors and digging equipment in two trucks. The suspects are believed to have been searching for a cache of gold sovereigns believed to have been buried in the area.

According to the Greek law it is forbidden for citizens to carry out excavations without a license.
